This is a list of Firefox addons I find very useful to make sure they all work in any version of Firefox please install nightly tester tool and the check compatibility v.31 addon first . In addition to Firefox addons I use some userscripts and userstyles you might find useful aswell . To use the following you must have both Stylish and greasemonkey installed . Keep in mind there are many more userstyles and userscripts at userstyles.org or userscript.org . Google Dark Blue Customize Google search results with Black background and blue text very easy on the eyes Force Bold Text Make all text easier to see. About:blank Black Make blank tabs black use with about:config number 1 Fancy Numbered Tabs Add some flare to your tabs Transparent URL and search bar Gives your search bar a nicer look instead of plain old white . Remove extra padding from the navigation bar Get rid of all that wasted space on your toolbar. Finally in addition to Firefox addons and userstyles and userscripts I also use about:config hacks .For those of you new to Firefox about:config is a way of getting underneath the hood of Firefox and getting at the code that makes it up so that you can change certain aspects of firefox you would like to tweak so that it behaves and looks the way you want .Here is a list of hacks I use . To perform these hacks type about:config in your address bar not to be confused with your search bar it's where you see web site urls appear then hit enter you will see a warning about warranties this applies to your Firefox not your PC and in a worst case scenario you can simply reinstall Firefox after uninstalling it with all preferences if you become confused and perform a hack that you cant remember that alters your Firefox in some way you don't like but I have tested the ones listed and have used them for years without any problems . Once inside the about:config panel type the words you see below in quotes in the panels search field you will be brought to that hacks location there you can double click on that line and change the value . 1 "browser.newtab.url;" you can change this value to about:blank and when you open a new tab it will open up to a blank tab instead of the new and annoying favorites page which I hate combined with userscript about:blank black which you see above gives you a black tab when opened which is very easy on the eyes ,but you can open a new tab to any image or video you want simply open a image or video by right clicking on it and open with Firefox copy the URL then instead of changing value to about:blank type about:then paste your image or video URL you will then see your favorite image or video when you open a new tab. 2"browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent;" change value to false this will make new tabs always open to the far right I find this very usefull for finding my new tab or search when I have many tabs open as I often do . 3"browser.tabs.onTop;" I have mine set to false this places the tabs bar on the bottom like in older versions of Firefox since I hate them on top . 4"browser.tabs.warnOnClose" "browser.tabs.warnOnCloseOtherTabs" Ihave these 3 hacks set to false "browser.tabs.warnOnOpen" they are annoying warnings about opening and closing tabs which I consider comepletely unnecessary. 5 "browser.search.openintab" I set mine to true this makes it so that when I type a word in the search bar and hit enter the search results open in a new tab .This is very useful when you dont want to navigate from the tab your on and only want to briefly visit a search result such as when you want to look up the definition of word you could always just click on new tab but for me this streamlines the way Firefox works especially because I'm all over the place when I browse . 6"browser.chrome.toolbar_tips" set to false and you will get rid of the little tips popup that appear every time you hover over a icon I know what all the icons in my tool bar do so I don't need a pop up evry time I click one . 7" layout.css.devPixelsPerPx" with this hack you can change the size of the icons in your toolbar and make them bigger or smaller instead of only 2 different sizes this especially good when old themes are altered as a result of Firefox updating its look and the theme creater stops updating as it was in my case with AEROFOX XL or you simply never liked the size of your icons 8"nglayout.initialpaint.delay" To use this hack you must right click on the panel and select create new interger and paste these words in and set the value to zero Firefox has a delay to anything it does creating this interger will make Firefox faster . 9"network.http.pipelining" "network.http.pipelining.aggressive" " network.http.proxy.pipelining" If you change these 3 to true you will speed up Firefox . 10 In windows if you want to speed up mouse scroll it is easy go to control and click on mouse then make your adjustment in the scroll tab but in linux there is no such options you therefore must use about:config to speed up scrolling othere wise scrolling is unbearably slow . Search for the following . " mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines" change this boolean to false "mousewheel.withnokey.numlines" This intergers default value is normally 1 you can set it to a higher number doing so will speed up scrolling unfortunetly this interger and boolean nolonger exist in newer versions of Firefox but luckily you can add them by right clicking anywhere on about:config panel and selecting new then interger or boolean ,but your not done yet in newer versions of firefox you must also change the following values. "mousewheel.system_scroll_override_on_root_content.enabled" set this boolean value to true . "mousewheel.min_line_scroll_amount" I have this interger value set to 50 which makes Firefox scroll really fast but you can set a lower value if you feel it misses lines when scrolling on your favorite web sites the value 50 works well for me however . Finally this is what the end result looks like . |
